Most format choices come down to just two questions: does this image need transparency, and does every platform it'll be viewed on definitely support the format? Compression efficiency only matters once those two are settled — there's no point picking AVIF for its smaller file size if the destination is an email client that doesn't render it.
How to use it

The formats, briefly
JPEG — lossy, no transparency, universally supported everywhere. The safe default for photographs.
PNG — lossless, supports transparency, larger files for photographic content but ideal for logos, screenshots, and sharp-edged graphics.
WebP — 25–35% smaller than equivalent JPEG/PNG at comparable quality, supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency and animation, and is supported by every modern browser.
AVIF — 30–50% smaller than WebP, supports HDR and 12-bit color, but browser and software support is still not as universal as WebP's.

Transparency Support by Format
PNG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF, and ICO support transparency (alpha channels). JPEG and BMP do not. When converting a transparent image to a non-transparent format, the transparent areas must be filled with a solid background color. Our tool lets you choose this color — white is the safe default.
