How key health calculations work, what they measure, and how to use them for informed wellness decisions.

Health metrics provide standardized ways to assess your body composition, metabolic rate, and nutritional needs. While no single number captures the full picture of health, understanding these metrics helps you set realistic goals, track progress, and make informed decisions about diet and exercise.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a simple ratio of weight to height (weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared). Developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, it remains the most widely used screening tool for weight categories. The WHO classifies BMI as underweight (below 18.5), normal weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), and obese (30 and above).

BMI has significant limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat — an athletic person with high muscle mass may have a "overweight" BMI despite having low body fat. It also does not account for fat distribution, which is a more important health indicator than total weight. Visceral fat (around organs) poses greater health risks than subcutaneous fat (under the skin).

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

BMR is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — the energy needed for basic physiological functions like breathing, circulation, cell production, and maintaining body temperature. BMR accounts for 60% to 75% of total daily energy expenditure for most people.

Several equations estimate BMR. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (used in ForgePlug's calculator) is considered the most accurate for modern populations: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) – 5 × age (years) – 161 (for women) or + 5 (for men). The Harris-Benedict equation and Katch-McArdle formula (which uses lean body mass) are alternatives with slightly different accuracy profiles.

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

TDEE extends BMR by accounting for physical activity. It is calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor: 1.2 for sedentary (little or no exercise), 1.375 for lightly active (1–3 days/week), 1.55 for moderately active (3–5 days/week), 1.725 for very active (6–7 days/week), and 1.9 for extremely active (physical job + exercise).

TDEE is the key number for weight management. To lose weight, you need a caloric deficit — consuming fewer calories than your TDEE. To gain weight, you need a surplus. A deficit of approximately 500 calories per day results in about 0.45 kg (1 pound) of weight loss per week, which is considered a safe and sustainable rate.

Macro Nutrient Calculation

Beyond total calories, the distribution of macronutrients — proteins, carbohydrates, and fats — affects body composition and performance. Protein (4 calories per gram) supports muscle maintenance and growth. Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram) provide energy for daily activities and exercise. Fats (9 calories per gram) support hormone production, nutrient absorption, and cell structure.

Common macro ratios include balanced (40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat), high-protein (30% carbs, 40% protein, 30% fat), and moderate-carb (45% carbs, 25% protein, 30% fat). The optimal ratio depends on your goals, activity level, and individual response.

Water Intake Calculation

General guidelines suggest 30–35 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day, but individual needs vary based on activity level, climate, body composition, and health status. Active individuals may need 40–50 ml per kg. Water intake calculations provide a baseline — listen to your body's thirst signals and adjust based on activity, weather, and urine color (pale yellow indicates adequate hydration).

These calculations are estimates based on population averages. Individual metabolism varies by 10–15% from predicted values due to genetics, body composition, hormonal factors, and lifestyle. Which BMR formula should I use?
Mifflin-St Jeor is the most accurate for most adults and is our default. Harris-Benedict is a classic alternative that often yields similar results. Katch-McArdle is most precise when you know your body-fat percentage, because it uses lean body mass directly. You can switch formulas and compare them instantly.
What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?
BMR is the energy your body burns at complete rest — just keeping you alive. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) multiplies BMR by your activity level and represents your true maintenance calories. Eating at TDEE maintains weight; a moderate deficit supports fat loss; a surplus supports muscle gain.
Are calorie deficits safe?
We never encourage unhealthy deficits. Our calculator applies a safe floor based on your BMR (never below ~1,200–1,500 kcal/day depending on gender) and offers gentle options like losing 0.25–0.5 kg per week. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any diet or exercise plan.

We use the US Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat from waist, neck, and (for women) hip measurements compared to height. It's a practical field method accurate to roughly ±3% for many people. The measurement is optional — if you skip it, we fall back to BMR estimates based on your other inputs.
How much water should I drink?
A common evidence-based guideline is ~33–35 ml per kg of body weight as a baseline, adjusted for climate, activity level, and exercise. Our calculator blends these factors. General public health guidance often cites ~2 L for women and ~2.5–3 L for men, but individual needs vary with heat, training, and sweat rate.
