Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about removing backgrounds

How does the Background Remover work?
Our tool uses an AI segmentation model (ISNet) that runs entirely in your browser via ONNX Runtime. When you upload an image, the model analyzes the pixels to distinguish the subject from the background, then generates a precise alpha mask. The result is a transparent PNG or WEBP image — all without uploading anything to a server.
What image formats are supported?
You can upload PNG, JPG, JPEG, WEBP, and AVIF images. The output is always a transparent image in PNG or WEBP format, which preserves the transparency created by background removal.
Is my image secure?
Absolutely. All processing happens entirely in your browser using ONNX Runtime WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded to any server, stored in any database, or transmitted over the network. Once you close the page, all data is cleared from memory.
What is the maximum file size?
The tool supports images up to 50 MB. For very large images, the AI model may take a few seconds to process. We recommend images between 500px and 4096px for the best balance of quality and speed.
How accurate is the background removal?
Our AI model achieves over 95% accuracy on most subjects. It excels at people, products, animals, and objects with clear edges. Complex scenarios like fine hair or translucent objects may require manual touch-up. The 'High Quality' mode provides the most accurate results.
Can I replace the background with a color?
Yes! After removing the background, you can choose from preset colors (white, black, gray, blue, green) or enter a custom hex color. The color is applied behind the subject before export.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, the tool is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. The AI model runs on your device's processor, so newer phones will process faster than older ones. We recommend using Wi-Fi for the initial model download.
What is the AI model size?
The ISNet model is approximately 25-35MB and is downloaded once, then cached in your browser. Subsequent uses load the cached model instantly without re-downloading.

Background Removal Guide

Tips and techniques for perfect results

What is Background Removal?

Background removal is the process of isolating the main subject in an image by making the background transparent. This is essential for product photography, profile pictures, graphic design, and e-commerce listings where a clean, distraction-free image is needed.

How AI Segmentation Works

Modern background removal uses deep learning models trained on millions of images. The model analyzes each pixel to determine whether it belongs to the subject or the background, creating a precise alpha mask. This is far more accurate than traditional color-based methods.

When to Use Transparent PNGs

Transparent PNGs are essential when you need to place a subject on different backgrounds — like product photos on a website, profile pictures on social media, or composite images in graphic design. PNG preserves transparency while maintaining image quality.

Tips for Best Results

For optimal background removal: use high-contrast images where the subject clearly stands out from the background. Avoid blurry or low-resolution images. Subjects with well-defined edges (like products or people) yield the best results. The 'High Quality' mode is recommended for professional use.
