Step Calculator

A free Step Calculator that converts steps to kilometres or miles — and back — using a step length estimated from your height (Hoeger et al. formula). See your distance, total steps, walking time at a brisk pace, calories burned, and steps-per-km/mile for easy goal setting. Works with the 10,000-steps goal and any daily target. Everything runs in your browser — private and mobile-friendly.

Why step length — not a flat 'steps per km' number — drives the math

Height determines stride length, and stride length is what actually converts steps to distance.

A lot of step-to-distance calculators use one fixed ratio for everyone, which is why they're often noticeably wrong. Stride length scales with height — the Hoeger et al. formula this tool uses estimates it at roughly 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women — so a 6-foot walker and a 5-foot walker cover meaningfully different ground for the same step count, and a single "2,000 steps per mile" rule of thumb can't capture both.

How to use it

  1. Enter your height and sex so the calculator can estimate your personal step length.
  2. Switch between Steps → Distance (enter a step count, get distance in km or miles) and Distance → Steps (enter a target distance, get the step count needed) depending on which direction you're planning.
  3. Enter your weight to see estimated calories burned, based on a brisk walking pace (~5 km/h, MET 3.5).
  4. Read the walking-time estimate alongside distance and calories, so a step goal translates into "about how long that actually takes."
  5. Use the steps-per-km/mile figure shown to sanity-check other trackers or pedometers against your own height-based estimate.

Common use cases

  • Translating a step goal into a walk you can plan — converting "hit 10,000 steps" into an actual distance and time commitment for the day.
  • Planning a walking route to hit a step target — working backward from a desired step count to the distance a route needs to cover.
  • Cross-checking a fitness tracker's estimate — comparing a smartwatch's reported distance against a height-based calculation to spot a badly calibrated device.
  • Setting a realistic personal goal — 10,000 steps/day is the popular default, but research shows meaningful benefit starting around 6,000–8,000, so this is a starting point to adjust from, not a hard requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about steps, distance, and calories

How do you estimate my step length?
Step length is estimated from your height using the Hoeger et al. formula: about 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women. Taller people naturally cover more ground per step, so the same step count covers more distance.
How many steps are in a kilometre or mile?
For an average adult, roughly 1,250–1,500 steps per kilometre and 2,000–2,400 steps per mile, depending on height. This calculator computes the exact value from your height.
Is 10,000 steps a day a good goal?
It's a popular and reasonable general target, but studies show meaningful health benefits from as few as 6,000–8,000 steps. Your ideal goal depends on your current activity, fitness, and health status.
Why does stride length matter for the calculation?
Distance and calorie estimates are both derived from steps multiplied by your stride length, so a taller person with a longer stride covers more distance in the same number of steps. Using your actual height (or a manually entered stride length) gives a noticeably more accurate result than a generic average.
Does walking speed change how many calories I burn per step?
Yes, to a degree — brisker walking raises heart rate and calorie burn per minute, though the effect on a strict per-step basis is smaller than the effect of total steps and body weight. Total distance covered still matters more than pace alone for most everyday walking.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser. Your height, weight, and step data never leave your device.

Tool Overview

A closer look at Step Calculator — how it works, who it's for, and where it fits in your workflow.

The 10,000-steps goal is a familiar daily target, but what does it actually mean in terms of distance or calories? The Step Calculator bridges the gap between your step count and real-world metrics: convert steps to kilometres or miles, distance to steps, and estimate calories burned while walking — all based on your height for a personalized step length using the Hoeger formula.

Step length varies significantly from person to person — taller people cover more ground with each step — so using a height-based estimate is far more accurate than a generic assumption. The calculator shows your distance in both km and miles, the total steps, estimated walking time at a brisk pace, and calories burned. It also computes your steps per km and per mile, making it easy to set distance-based goals instead of step-count goals. Whether you're tracking toward 10,000 steps or a 5 km daily walk, the calculator gives you the numbers that matter.
